Playful Parenting
Parenting is a Rollercoaster! So Raise Your Hands, Laugh Out Loud, and Enjoy Every Tummy Jiggler Along The Way!

Take a moment to think about this question:  If you spent as much time on your daily activities or at work as you spend with your children would you receive a promotion or be fired?

As a parent, we may feel that we are too busy or too tired to put forth the effort to be a playful parent.  However, being a playful parent may not be as hard to envision as we may think.  It does not mean that we need to be outside playing soccer or tag with our kids every evening, or having a water balloon fight every afternoon – although these are fun activities to throw in every now and then!

You can make being a playful parent as simple as putting on silly hats and turning up the music while doing your Saturday morning chore list  together, or laying out a blanket on the living room floor and creating an indoor picnic with healthy snacks and having fun with conversation starters or thought provoking questions together.  By developing a playful parent character, we can lift our children’s spirits and brighten their day just by having a positive attitude in all that we do – it may even brighten our day as well!

Even though our days may seem overloaded and rushed and we feel too exhausted to be a playful parent, it is important that we spend quality time with our children.  Parents often find it easy to simply say, “Watch something on TV for awhile while I get some work done. We’ll play something when I’m finished.”  This may seem like a quick and easy solution, but as we all know TV is far from being  beneficial to our kids.  There are many great, indoor games, outdoor games, or board games to play together in place of TV.

Brainstorm ways to become a playful parent and involve your children, even while you work.  Let your toddler pull up a chair next to the sink and rinse your dishes for you, or have your teenager read a chapter out of their reading book to you while you file office papers.  You can also create fitness fun for kids and parents by going for a walk or going swimming together.  Being a playful parent as well as a creative thinking parent will show your child that they are important to you and that you value the time you spend together.
